Join the Friends of the Library to explore the story of misunderstood immigrants and their struggle to gain recognition and acceptance in the rural American South.
In their book, South Carolina’s Turkish People, scholars Terri Ann Ognibene and Glen Browder reveal the never-told but true story of how a dark-skinned community endured nearly two centuries of isolation, segregation, discrimination, and oppression.
This story is important not only for the belated recognition and dignity of that community but also as a compelling addition to our understanding of the American experience.

Terri Ann Ognibene earned a Ph.D. in language and literacy education from Georgia State University. She teaches Spanish at Pope High School in Marietta, Georgia, where she was named Teacher of the Year for 2015–16.
Glen Browder holds a Ph.D. in political science from Emory University and is a professor emeritus of political science and American democracy at Jacksonville State University in Alabama. A former member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Browder also served Alabama in its House of Representatives and as secretary of state.
