NASA Lands at the Library Saturday, Aug. 19 - College of Charleston Libraries

August 16, 2017
Friends of the Library, Exhibits, Events, College of Charleston, Addlestone Library

The lunar shadow is fast approaching the Lowcountry. Before donning viewing glasses and craning your neck, join the Friends of the Library for a pair of FREE presentations with NASA scientists Alex Young and Paul Hertz.

On Saturday, Aug. 19, at 2:00 p.m., learn where and when to experience the awe-inspiring celestial event with Dr. Young as he discusses the wonder of total solar eclipses.

How do astrophysicists search for planets that orbit stars outside our solar system? Dr. Hertz explores this topic and more on Sunday, Aug. 20, at 2:00 p.m.

These events are FREE and open to everyone, and will take place on the third floor of Addlestone Library. Registration is not required.

Both speakers will present in front of NASA’s Hyperwall, open to the public in Addlestone Library Aug. 19-23. For more information, visit our website.

  • Hand-drawn illustrations of eclipses occurring in the 19th and early 20th centuries
  • An 1835 handwritten sermon preached on the eclipse by Jasper Adams, a former president of the College
  • Historic almanacs from 1763 (image below) and 1846 featuring eclipse predictions
