On November 14th, 2012, Dr. Curtis Worthington spoke on his recently published anthology of Lowcountry-based authors and works of literature that use Lowcountry locals. Held at the Avery Research Center, Dr. Worthington gave an overview of Charleston’s expansive literary history and influence.

About Dr. Curtis Worthington and Literary Charleston

Charleston and the surrounding Lowcountry have stimulated a host of literary endeavors and accomplishments. In this anthology, Dr. Worthington has assembled a chronological selection of generous excerpts from some of the best writers who have lived in Charleston or used it as a locale, including Edgar Allan Poe, Henry James, Amy Lowell, DuBose Heyward, Josephine Humphreys, James Dickey, Pat Conroy, and others. A foreword by distinguished scholar, author and College of Charleston alumnus Louis D. Rubin, Jr. ‘44 provides an overview of Charleston’s rich literary history and a rationale for the inclusion of the authors and works in this anthology. Dr. Worthington was raised in Charleston and is descended from the Calhoun, Pickens, and other notable South Carolina families. Educated in Montreal, South Florida, and Oxford, he is a member of the Board of Governors of the South Carolina Academy of Authors. He is a practicing neurosurgeon in Charleston.
