Saturday, November 7, 2pm in Addlestone Library Room 227

Join John White, Dean of the Libraries, this Saturday for a public talk, “Reluctant Desegregation: Charleston in 1964.” Dr. Millicent E. Brown will also share her personal experiences of integration in Charleston County schools and her ongoing work with the Somebody Had To Do It Project. The Lowcountry Digital History Initiative will highlight the online exhibition, Somebody Had To Do It: First Children in School Desegregation, which examines the history of school desegregation in South Carolina and the U.S. South and features oral history videos.

The Wisconsin Historical Society’s “Risking Everything” exhibit explores the history of Freedom Summer and will be on display in the Addlestone Library Rotunda through December 1, 2015.  Free and open to the public.

This event is in conjunction with the College Reads! Program, which is featuring Bruce Watson’s Freedom Summer:  The Savage Season of 1964 That Made Mississippi Burn and Made American a Democracy. Mr. Watson will be on campus November 9-10, 2015, and will deliver his public lecture on Monday, November 9 at 7pm. in Sottile Theatre. The lecture will be free and open to all. Addlestone Library is open to the College of Charleston community and affiliates via card access. Visitors may access Addlestone Library Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm, and must present a government issued ID and sign in upon entry.
