Charles Waring comes to speak about the recent re- release of his mother’s book The Way It Was in Charleston. The book paints a picture of Charleston in the early part of the 20th century.  As the late News and Courier columnist Frank Gilbreth noted in the book’s foreword, “Laura Witte, in later life, set down these recollections at the insistence of her children, with no thought of publication. Endowed with a prodigious memory and a natural gift for vivid description, she has given us a picture of Charleston from 1882 to 1895 not found in our history books.”   The book focuses on the early history of Ashley Hall and the beginning of its second century of education for the young women of the Lowcountry. Waring will discuss  the connection between the experiences of the Witte girls and their influence and education at Ashley Hall School.
