Jan. 29 | "Ominous Tales from Black Shales" feat. Dr. Them - College of Charleston Libraries
Tuesday, Jan. 29 | 12:00 pm | Addlestone Library Rm. 227 | FREE
The College of Charleston Friends of the Library and Honors College present the inaugural event of the Spring 2019 Faculty Lecture Series, “Ominous Tales from Black Shales: What the Past Can Tell Us About the Future,” featuring Assistant Professor Dr. Theodore Them, Dept. of Geology and Environmental Geosciences.
As modern atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations increase at potentially unprecedented rates, it is imperative that we use the geologic record to inform us about the response of the Earth system to similar events in the past. This event will focus on the rapid environmental changes that occurred in the Early Jurassic that resulted in a mass extinction event in the oceans. New and novel geochemical techniques will be presented in order to determine the drivers of environmental change and biotic response during this event, which help paint a clearer picture of what to expect in the future.
The event is free and open to the public; registration is required.
Lunch will be provided.
