Escaping Enslavement and the Mechanisms of Control over Enslaved Bodies in South Carolina and Georgia

A new exhibit featuring SCHS collection items is on view on the third floor of the Addlestone Library.

The exhibit, which coincides with the Program in the Carolina Lowcountry and Atlantic World’s (CLAW) Wells Fargo lecture and faculty seminar delivered by Dr. Edward Baptist, is entitled “In Consequence of the Apprehension”: Escaping Enslavement and the Mechanisms of Control over Enslaved Bodies in South Carolina and Georgia.

Images and correspondence relating to William and Ellen Craft’s path to self-liberation are starkly juxtaposed against advertisements for persons who fled enslavement and the community organizations that grew out of the desire to control and inhibit their escape.

The exhibit is informed by archival resources at the Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture, the South Carolina Historical Society, and Special Collections at the College of Charleston.

On display through the month of October.
